Abergavenny and its markets

21st September 2002 - 23rd March 2003

Abergavenny and its MarketsIn September 2002 the castle grounds were used for the first time by the Abergavenny Food Festival. To coincide with this we put together an exhibition about Markets from Roman Times to the Present Day. We chose this topic as Abergavenny is well known as a market town, with up to 15,000 people visiting the Tuesday market.

In the exhibition were photographs, documents and artefacts from the Museum Collections. We borrowed items from members of the public, livestock auctioneers and the museums in Brecon and Newport. We also borrowed a canopy from the market, enabling us to set up our own stall in the museum.

Schools have used the exhibition, combining visits to the museum with a trip to the market and comparing shops today with the markets and Basil Jones's grocery shop.
