This exhibition looked at the history of St Mary’s Church, Abergavenny.

The Priory was a Monastery of Benedictine Monks, founded in the reign of Henry I, by Hamelin de Ballon, the first Norman Lord of Abergavenny.  Since this date there have always been strong links between the castle and the church.  After the Dissolution of the Priory, in 1543, the Priory Church became the Parish Church.

The church has a fine collection of medieval monuments and our exhibition displayed many of the wonderful photographs we have that depict them.  We were also fortunate to borrow a medieval vestment to exhibit for part of the exhibition.  Other items on display included part of the rood screen, a nineteenth century bell clapper, Roman glass found during excavations and a Bishops Register from the fourteenth century.

This exhibition was curated by Matthew McConnel, a postgraduate student from the USA who did an internship with us for two months.
